Going to London can be an expensive venture. Especially now that they are getting two dollars for the British Pound. I can remember as a child going there and it was $1.20 for a Pound. So in about twenty years it has gone up considerably and that makes traveling to Britain difficult unless you are rich. I am not rich so if I am going to go to England I like many others am going to have to figure out how to do it cheap. London Hostels are one way. The hostel scene is one that every independent traveler has gone through for better and for worse. Where else can you crash for less? In almost every major city in the world you can find a hostel bed that will be inexpensive compared to the hotels or guest houses around it.
Independent travel is still alive and well even though economies are crashing and currency conversion is against the dollar. There are still plenty of free and inexpensive things to do in all big cities. Museums and Cathedrals are one way to spend an afternoon. London has plenty of both to keep you going for a couple of weeks at least. Open air markets are great in the summertime and there is usually cheap food at these types of events. There are many options for being cheap in London you just have to be creative and choose wisely for what you want to see and do.
